Sept 13: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Apple to launch a blood pressure detection feature on certain of its smartwatches, the health regulator stated in a statement late on Friday.

Apple announced the new hypertension notice feature will go live on Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, and the high-end Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 models by the end of September.

The feature, which will be released in 150 countries and regions, including the U.S. and EU, relies on the optical heart sensor to scan the reactions of blood vessels to heartbeats.

Passively operating, the algorithm checks data in 30-day cycles and warns users if it finds regular indications of hypertension, Apple said.

But the company said the feature will not identify all instances of high blood pressure, but potentially warn a million users.

Bloomberg News, which originally reported the story, reported Apple will introduce the feature in smartwatches next week.
