Russell Wilson’s era began unevenly for New York in Week 1 as the Giants fell to the Washington Commanders 21-6, with Wilson and the Giants’ offense struggling significantly.
Wilson went 17-for-37 for a meager 168 yards and came close to fumbling it away. The Giants were also outgained 432-231 and made only 4 of 16 third-down conversions.
On Wednesday, Wilson addressed the media and emphasized the narrow margin halfway through the fourth quarter as justification for hope, while also admitting he looks forward to seeing better effort from himself.
“I think the biggest aspect of that game was the red zone, ball on the one, we’ve got to get the ball in,” Wilson said. “We’ve got to find ways to score down there. I think that’s the biggest aspect of the game. This game was 14 to 6 with like six, seven minutes to go. We had two chances down there and we didn’t get it done.”.

“I didn’t play good enough. I think you always want to play better. Obviously, whenever you don’t win, you always feel like there’s more to do. I think that’s the biggest thing and just focus on playing it great this week.”

Wilson is now poised to become the fourth QB to start against the Cowboys in the past five encounters, but demands for top reserve and first-round pick Jaxson Dart have grown only since Wilson’s Giants’ debut.
Russell Wilson on fighting Embrace challenge
The 14-year veteran and 10-time Pro Bowler is not concerned with those calls at least for now, particularly after his head coach Brian Daboll himself recently indicated Wilson would start again for Week 2 facing the Dallas Cowboys.
I believe that you accept challenge,” Wilson stated. “I do not believe I avoid challenges. I do not believe that I avoid anything. I know how confident I am in me; confident I am in the men that we possess.
Wilson led the team in rushing against Washington, and that clearly wasn’t in the plan. Giants running backs as a group ran for 30 yards on 15 carries, an unacceptable 2.0 yards per carry ratio.

Those statistics didn’t assist the Giants either.
It’s not about me, it’s about us as a group, and I feel like if we can play a little cleaner on first and second down, I mean, that’s the name — we had so many second-and-longs and third-and-longs,” Wilson said. “It’s difficult to win like that, and we still had a chance to win. That’s the crazy thing.”. We still had a shot to win down there and down low. I think that’s what we’ve got to clean up and do.”
