MOSCOW: A 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Kamchatka in Russia’s Far East on Saturday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

There was no danger that the earthquake had caused a tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) said.

The USGS reported the quake occurred 111 kilometres (69 miles) east of Russian city Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, administrative capital of Kamchatka, at a depth of 39.5 kilometres.

The survey initially reported a magnitude of 7.5, before it was reduced.

The PTWC initially predicted “hazardous” waves of up to one metre (3.3 feet) along parts of nearby Russian coastlines.

The centre subsequently stated, “the tsunami threat… has now passed”.

In July, the world’s second-largest earthquake in recorded history hit off the Kamchatka peninsula, generating tsunamis of up to four metres in the Pacific and prompting evacuations from Hawaii to Japan.

The 8.8-magnitude quake was the largest since 2011, when a 9.1-magnitude quake off Japan produced a tsunami that resulted in over 15,000 fatalities.

July’s quake induced Japanese officials to instruct nearly two million individuals to seek higher ground.

Tsunami warnings were also made throughout the region, prior to being canceled or reduced.
