Reality behind Donald Trump’s ‘breach of royal protocol’ during UK trip clarified
Donald Trump ignited a huge controversy on his recent visit to the UK!
Following a video showing the President touching King Charles on the back and Prince William on the arm, social media tweets asserted that this was a breach of royal protocol.
But BBC reporter Richard Irvine-Brown explained that according to the official royal website assertions, “There are no obligatory codes of behaviour when meeting The Queen or a member of the Royal Family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms.”
Conversely, ancient royal protocol dictates you shouldn’t precede the monarch. Trump was thus “accused of violating protocol” by preceding King Charles for a short time.
However, royal officials say walking ahead is okay “if the monarch grants their permission.”

Richard explained, “President Emmanuel Macron of France did the same thing in July of this year,” continuing, “according to Trump’s visit, we can see clearly King Charles leading Trump forward to inspect the guard.”
Donald Trump traveled to the UK between September 16–18, 2025 and First Lady Melania Trump. They were officially welcomed by King Charles and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle as well as by the Prince and Princess of Wales, Prince William and Kate Middleton.
