KARACHI: Large welfare schemes for industrial workers have been announced by the Sindh government through the recently launched Workers’ Welfare Card.

The scheme will give industrial workers accident health cover up to Rs. 700,000, 10,000 e-motorcycles and sewing machines, apart from other benefits, said Secretary Labour Rafiq Qureshi.
The Workers’ Welfare Card would bring a “new, brighter chapter” to the lives of workers, he claimed.
Sindh is the first province of Pakistan to launch accident health insurance worth up to Rs. 700,000 for workers in over 270 hospitals in the country.
Pointing out the workforce as the backbone of the national economy, Qureshi announced that e-motorcycles would be provided to 10,000 industrial women and minority workers soon.

In order to give more power to women, sewing machines will be given under the scheme too.
The secretary went on to say that laborers would no longer have to wait in long queues since the Welfare Card will provide easy access to facilities like marriage grants and death grants.

Qureshi vowed that exploitation of employees would not be accepted, threatening to take stringent action against industries that did not register workers. He called upon employees to realize their rights and get registered under the welfare regime.
